Alice R. Jones

Memorial services for Alice Ruth Jones, age 90, of Mentor, will be 11 AM Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Mentor United Methodist Church, 8600 Mentor Avenue, Mentor. The Rev. Beverly L. Wrobel will officiate at the service.

Mrs. Jones passed away Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Fairmount Health Center in Willoughby.

Born February 2, 1921 in East Cleveland, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna Marie (Hansen) Young.

On February 13, 1954, Alice married Rutgers "Rex" C. Jones and they moved to Mentor.  Their son, Paul, was born there in 1955.  Rex's job with Combustion Engineering took them to Edina, MN for eight years but a transfer back to Ohio saw them once again settling in Mentor.

Alice was an active member of Mentor United Methodist Church and enjoyed the fellowship provided by the congregation. She also volunteered enthusiastically with Mentor Women's Club and Wildwood Garden Club. Alice regarded her education at Andrews School for Girls in Willoughby as an important part of her life. She formed life-long friendships and was an active and dedicated participant in activities through the Andrews School Alumni Association. She served for a time as the treasurer of Friends of Andrews School Library. 

For many years, Alice enjoyed volunteering at Playhouse Square. She was also an avid bridge player, meeting with several different groups of friends weekly. Inheriting a love of animals from her father, Alice enjoyed the company of her collie, Pup, and kept in shape walking him daily. When she moved to Breckenridge Village in 2008, Pup enjoyed several more years of life in Colorado where Alice loved to pay him visits.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Anne Marie Shannon, of Evergreen, CO. Her nephew, Carl Young; a niece, Sheilah Richardson; great nephews Ross and Ryan Richardson, great niece Michele Haubiel, also survive.

Preceding Alice in death were her husband, Rutgers; her son Paul, sister Dorothy Hertel and brother Edward Young.

An important part of Alice's life and a reason for her longevity was the love and care of her friends. Always willing to provide transportation, assistance and companionship, thanks must go to Bonnie and Paul Peddie and Bonnie Stewart among a legion of others who helped Alice make the most of her later years. For the past four years, Alice would not have remained happy and independent without the dedication and devotion of Frank Masevice, her friend for over 65 years. His kindness redefines the word "friendship." 

There will be no calling hours.  Private family burial will be in Mentor Cemetery.
