Daniel N. Winchell

A service to celebrate the life of Daniel N. Winchell, 78, of Mentor-on-the-Lake, will be at 7 PM on Thursday, January 8, 2026 at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Avenue, Willoughby.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 PM on Thursday, prior to the service.

Mr. Winchell passed away Saturday, January 3, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born June 15, 1947 in Painesville, he was a lifelong Lake County resident.

He enjoyed golfing, playing softball in adult leagues into his sixties, and was also a fan of all Cleveland sports teams. He was also a United States Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Winchell was employed as a carman for Conrail and Norfolk-Southern Railroads, mostly in the Macedonia yards and also for a short time in the Collinwood and Whiskey Island yards. He retired in 2007, after 35 years of service.

Survivors are his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Janice (Friedlander); daughters, Christa Winchell and Brooke (Sara) Winchell and brother, Michael (Vickie) Winchell and his sister-in-law, Suzann (Jim) Harwood. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Betty (Lette) Winchell and his brother, Thomas Winchell.

Private family interment will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township.
