September 8, 1925 — April 29, 2013

Dean G. Shumaker, 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 29, 2013 at his home, with his daughters by his side.

Born September 8, 1925 in Cleveland, he was a lifelong Northeast Ohio resident, having graduated from Shaw High School and John Carroll University where he earned a degree in business.

He was honorably discharged after having served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Dean continued his love for aviation as a private pilot and as an aircraft and power plant mechanic. He has also owned several aircraft and participated in the Cleveland Air Races.

Dean volunteered his time with Junior Achievement, SCORE, the Lake County MetroParks and the annual Gathering of Eagles held at Lost Nation Airport in Willoughby. He enjoyed life to the fullest with his family and many friends. He was always busy with projects and hobbies.

Mr. Shumaker was employed as a vice president of manufacturing at the former Gould Ocean Systems in Euclid, retiring in 1983.

Survivors are his loving daughters, Laura (William) Von Benken and Sandra (Keith, Jr.) Thompson and cherished grandchildren, Todd Thompson, Megan Stilla, Timothy Thompson and Trevor Thompson.

His beloved wife, Mary (nee: Campbell) Shumaker, passed away November 20, 1994.

At his request, there will be no calling hours or services. Instead, it was his wish to “raise a glass” and celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to Hospice of the Western Reserve, Inc., 17876 St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44110-2602.

Arrangements entrusted to Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, Willoughby.
