Gloria R. Meyer

Services for Gloria Ruth (Ulch) Meyer, 93, of Kirtland Hills, will be at 11 AM on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Mentor United Methodist Church, 8600 Mentor Avenue, Mentor. The Rev. Sondra D. Snode will officiate at the service.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Avenue, Willoughby and from 10-10:45 AM on Thursday, prior to the service, at the Church.

Gloria passed away Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Mentor Ridge Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Born May 4, 1928 in Cleveland, she lived in Wickliffe for 10 years before her family moved to Shaker Heights.
She has lived in Kirtland Hills since 1967.

She graduated from Shaker Heights High School, class of 1946 and from Kent State University class of 1950 with her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She then taught at Tod Elementary School in Cleveland for four years, followed by 34 years as first-grade teacher at the former Brentmoor Elementary School in Mentor.

Her love for life was reflected by her participation in many activities and groups. She started tap dancing at the age of six, continuing until she was 18. Many times, she would dance and twirl her baton on a drum her father had made. As a member of the Brentmoor Garden Club, she enjoyed designing different floral arrangements each month. For many years, she would make floral arrangements, birthday cards and get-well cards for local nursing home residents. Each year, family members and friends anticipated receiving her creative Christmas cards, which always included her grandchildren’s photos.

Gloria was a member of and taught Sunday school at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights and later at Mentor United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority, Rainbow Girls, Order of the Eastern Star, Willoughby Chapter 202, and the Lake County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a Scout Leader and a board member of the Mentor Rainbow Girls.

While she was a member of The Lake County YMCA, Painesville branch, she served as the head timer for the swim team and later participated in the Y’s arthritic water group. In her spare time, she relaxed by golfing, bowling, playing bridge, reading, attending plays and travelling extensively, both home and abroad. Her most recent achievement was becoming Mentor Ridge Health and Rehab Center’s Ms. Golden Girl for 2021 and the chance to represent them in the Ms. Golden Girl Ohio contest.

Gloria is survived by her daughters, Debra (Jack) Blazey and Kimberly (Dana) Ludwig; grandchildren, Jennifer (Brett) Huss, Jim (Nicole) Blazey, Josh (Mackenzie) Ludwig and Julia Ludwig and great-grandchildren, Wyatt Huss and Levi Ludwig. For many years, she also hosted foreign exchange students.

She was preceded in death in 1980 by her husband of 28 years, Jack, whom she married at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church in 1952, and her son, Jeffrey Meyer who passed away in 2020. Her parents, Howard and Fanny (Peake) Ulch; brothers, Charles, William and Jack Ulch and sister, Gladys Meisel are also deceased.

Her final resting place will at Whitehaven Memorial Park in Mayfield Village, next to her husband, Jack.
