J. Robert Jay, 85, of Willoughby, a retired Mentor High School teacher, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 11, 2012. Born March 18, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio, he was raised in Worthington, OH and was a former resident of Germantown, Ohio before moving to Willoughby in 1954. He was a member of Mentor United Methodist Church and an associate member of Mount Dora Presbyterian Church in Mount Dora, FL; he was also a member of Temple Lodge 28 F. & A.M. in Painesville and the Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland. Mr. Jay was employed as a teacher in the English Department at Mentor High School for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He taught English, Speech and Drama classes, and directed the theatre department for many years as well. He also taught several years at Lakeland Community College and Telshe Yeshiva College in Wickliffe. Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Wilhelmina "Billie" (Hawthorne) Jay; sons, Rob (Lori) Jay of Columbus, MT; Jon (Laurie) Jay of Worthington, OH; Joel Jay of Columbus, OH and Jeff Jay of Willoughby; granddaughters, Rachel, Chelsea and Nichole and great grandson, Gabriel. His parents, James Roy and Mary L. (Chapman) Jay are deceased. There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Mentor United Methodist Church, 8600 Mentor Avenue, Mentor, 44060. Informal attire requested.
