Lois Evelyn Leggat

Graveside committal and interment for Lois Evelyn (Winegar) Leggat, will be at 11 AM on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Willoughby Cemetery, on Sharpe Avenue in Willoughby.

Mrs. Leggat passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013 in Bandon, Oregon.

Born April 26, 1921 in Goshen, IN, to the late Edmund Mills and Esta Marie (Wyland) Winegar, her family moved to Willoughby when she was three years old.

Lois was the salutatorian of the class of 1939 at the former Willoughby Union High School, and then attended Ohio Wesleyan University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1943. During her college career, she pledged Pi Beta Phi sorority in 1940, and was initiated in 1941. She continued her affiliation with her sorority through her years in California.

She married her high school sweetheart, Hugh Matthew Leggat at midnight on April 21, 1944, because Hugh had only five days to report the Banana River Naval Air Station in Florida. After his military service, Hugh and Lois returned to Willoughby, where they made their home and raised three children and Lois was a homemaker. In 1961, the family moved to Fullerton, CA and Lois later moved to Bandon, OR in 1988.

Lois enjoyed reading, playing bridge and “Scrabble”, playing and following sports, watching “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy”, and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

Mrs. Leggat was employed at Hunt/Wesson Foods during her years in California.

She is survived by her brother, Rollin Winegar of Mentor; son, David Hugh (Hitomi) Leggat of Palm Desert, CA and their children, Aimee (Ken) Holloway, Matthew Leggat and Kira Leggat; daughters, Diane (Bob) Nelson of Bandon, OR and their children, Josh (Crystal), Jeremy (Jessica) and Krista (Travis) Cook and Denise Jennings and her children, Raul (Beth) Villegas, Sergio (Toni) Villegas and Chelsea Jennings all of Southern CA; ten great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh, in 1972.

There will be no calling hours or services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to Crohn’s Disease research.

Arrangements entrusted to Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, Willoughby.
