A celebration of the life of Mary Jane (Sidbeck) Scott, 70, of Mentor, will be at 2 PM on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Mentor United Methodist Church, 8600 Mentor Avenue, Mentor.
Mrs. Scott passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at Hospice House in Cleveland.
Born December 11, 1951 in Ashtabula, she had lived in Mentor for the past 45 years.
Mary Jane dedicated her life to the service of others. This passion to help those in need was evident not only in the way she approached her career as a nurse, but also as a wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, caregiver, friend and so many other roles that she took on with all her heart and soul. She always put others first, even if it created additional challenges in her own life.
When Mary Jane became a nurse at Hospice of the Western Reserve, when she became a volunteer and ultimately a board member at Project Hope for the Homeless, when she did mission work at Mentor Plains United Methodist Church, and then Mentor United Methodist Church, it wasn't work to her. It was a calling, an opportunity to make someone else's life a little better and a little brighter, whether that was providing backpacks filled with school supplies to children or being there for someone grieving the loss of a loved one.
Mary Jane was a 1970 graduate of Harbor High School in Ashtabula. As a child, she was involved in Girl Scouts. As she got older, she worked as a candy striper at Ashtabula General Hospital and in school, was involved with Senior Women, and American Field Service.
After graduation, she studied to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She spent more than 20 years working at nursing homes before she joined Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland. In 2007, she transitioned to Montefiore in Beachwood and worked for seven more years before retiring from nursing in 2014. But she never really stopped being a nurse, a caregiver and a friend to anyone who crossed her path.
Survivors are her husband of 49 years, Richard Scott; children, Mark (Amanda) Scott, Michelle (Tim Pope) and Meghan; four grandchildren, Karalyn, Jenna, Kaley and Tyler; her brother Alan (Janice) Sidbeck, and her sisters, Donna (Thomas Orr), and Shirley Wilkinson.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Henry and Margaret (Hensel) Sidbeck; her brothers Charles (JoJo) Sidbeck and Robert (Mary Lou) Sidbeck; and brother-in-law Robert Wilkinson.
Private family entombment will be in the columbarium at Mentor Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to Project Hope for the Homeless, 25 Freedom Road, Painesville, OH, 44077.
