Services for Muril F. Zimmerman, 86, of Mentor, will be at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Mentor United Methodist Church, 8600 Mentor Ave., Mentor.

Mr. Zimmerman passed away December 15, 2022 at Governor’s Pointe Assisted Living.

Born March 1, 1936 in Logan, Ohio, he has lived in Mentor for the past 58 years.

Muril was a 1954 graduate of Union Furnace High School and a 1958 graduate of Ohio University. He went on to receive a Masters in music education from Vandercook College of Music. He was a music teacher in the Mentor School System for over 30 years, retiring in 1989. He also taught private lessons to many students over the years.

He was an active member of the music education organizations OMEA, ASBDA, and MENC. He played saxophone in several big bands, and many music groups over the years. He was a member of Mentor United Methodist Church.

Muril enjoyed playing duets with students who became friends, and the conversations that followed were priceless to him. He also enjoyed supplying the neighborhood with vegetables from his large backyard garden. He was a talented woodworker, making footstools for family and friends, trellises, furniture and more.

Many of his projects were all-encompassing, from harvesting the wood, to hand finishing the piece with help from his love, Alice. Nothing made him happier than to work in his shop with his grandchildren.

Survivors are his children, Daniel (Kathy) Zimmerman, Scot (Kathy) Zimmerman and Wendy Zimmerman; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd (Garnet) Zimmerman and Larry Zimmerman, nieces and nephews, and many great friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Alice Joy (Fielder) Zimmerman, whom he married in 1957. His parents, Harold F. and Mae (Griffith) Zimmerman and his sister, Jana Mae Zimmerman are also deceased.

Muril’s children are extremely grateful to Governor’s Pointe and Hospice of the Western Reserve for their kindness and exceptional care.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, PO Box 72101, Cleveland, OH 44192-0002 or donate online at https://hospicewr.org/tribute or the Mentor United Methodist Church music department.

Final resting place will be in Mentor Cemetery, following the service on Wednesday.
