Richard James Reed

(Riehl) Reed. Dear father to Jonathan B. (Kathy) Reed, Alice R. (Arthur) Lubell, and Charlotte R. Lyons. Grandfather to Jamie (Nancy) Worden, Adam, Austin and Sarah Lubell, and Zoe and Griffin Lyons. Son of the late Richard J. and Charlene (Birge) Reed Sr. Cousin to Henry (Barb) Nachbar. Brother to the late Rosamunde Reed. Nephew of the late Judy Naselli. Born a farm boy in Buffalo, New York in 1924, he was raised in Tonawanda and educated in a one room schoolhouse, going on to graduate Tau Beta Pi (Mechanical Engineering) from Purdue University in 1944. He then served as an officer in the U.S. Navy until 1946. He went on to teach mechanical engineering at both Fenn College and Case Institute. This led to a 54 year career at North American Manufacturing Company where he retired as Technical Director. During his career, he lectured around the world and wrote technical papers and handbooks on combustion engineering. First and foremost was his love of family and friends. Dick also enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening , trees and nature through the Burroughs Nature Club of Willoughby where he was a member for over 60 years, travel, photography, woodworking, music, genealogy, history and a 62 year membership at Church of the Saviour in Cleveland Heights, where he was active in the Wesley Class. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Family suggests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O.Box 74924 Cleveland, Ohio 44194-4924 or alz.org.
