Robert Carter

Robert "Pete" Carter, aged 80, passed away on September 15, 2023. He was a devoted family man who brought joy and love into the lives of those around him. His infectious laughter could light up any room, making him a beloved presence in the lives of his family and friends.

Born on December 19, 1942, in Lavonia, Georgia, to his parents, Thomas Cawthon and Angie Collis Elrod, he later married Carole Carter (née Stone), with whom he shared 33 years of a loving and enduring marriage. Carole was truly his first love, and their story served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Pete carried the values instilled in him by his parents throughout his life, marriage, and fatherhood. He was predeceased by his parents and his loving wife, Carole, the mother of his children.

Pete leaves behind a legacy of family, survived by his wife, Connie, with whom he shared 21 dedicated years. His memory will be forever cherished by his children: Cynthia Haavisto (née Carter) and her husband, Clyde, Chris Carter, and Amy Carter-Ross.

Pete had a very large and loving family that spanned many generations. He was a sibling to numerous brothers and sisters, many of whom have already passed away. Their bonds of affection and shared memories will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew them.

Pete was also a devoted grandfather to Carrie Sabljakovic (née Haavisto) and her husband, Mac, Christine Yee (née Haavisto) and her husband, Scott, Chelsea Carter, Nicholas Carter, Jenna Ross and a great-grandfather to Ayman Sabljakovic, Gwen Yee, and Cory Yee.

In addition to his family, Pete had a deep passion for all things John Deere and spent countless hours tending to his prized green machines. He was a tenured foreman in the local 860 labor union, known for his commitment to ensuring that jobs were done right. His meticulous approach to his work was evident throughout his career, where he exemplified a dedication to excellence that inspired those around him.

Pete's sense of humor, creativity, and unwavering devotion to his family and passions will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and enduring memories that will be treasured for generations to come.

The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating Pete's life at a funeral service at 1:00 PM Thursday, September 21, 2023, which will be held at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Ave., Willoughby. Family will receive friends 5-8 PM Wednesday and 11 AM- 1 PM Thursday, at the funeral home.
