Shirley J. Basil

Services for Shirley J. (Strong) Basil, 87, of Willoughby, will be at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Avenue, Willoughby. The Rev. Donald R. Perks of Willoughby United Methodist Church will officiate at the service.

Mrs. Basil passed away Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Kemper House in Mentor.

Born September 13, 1927 in Cleveland, she has lived in Willoughby for the past 59 years.

She was a member of Willoughby United Methodist Church and the Willoughby Senior Center. She enjoyed reading, her dogs, plants and working in her yard.

Mrs. Basil was employed as an elementary teacher in the Willoughby-Eastlake Schools at Grant Elementary and the former McKinley Elementary, both in Willoughby. She retired in 1992 after 28 years of service.

Survivors are her children, John D. Basil of Pittsburgh, PA and Laura L. Basil of Willoughby; grandchildren, Sara Basil of Raleigh, NC and Kevin Basil of Pittsburgh, PA; and great-granddaughter, Lucy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin F. Basil in February 27, 1985. Her parents, Merrit and Bessie (Decker) Strong are also deceased.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the funeral home. Final resting place will be in Willoughby Memorial Gardens, Willoughby.
