Services for Thomas G. Johnson, 89, of Kirtland, will be 11 AM Friday, September 28, 2012 at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Avenue, Willoughby. Mr. Johnson passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Mentor-Way Care Center in Mentor. Born December 23, 1922 in Geneva, he has lived in Kirtland for the past 60 years. Mr. Johnson served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was later recalled to serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, as a C-54 pilot. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant on June 7, 1952. He was a charter member of the Kirtland Kiwanis Club for 52 years, served as a volunteer fireman in Kirtland for 25 years, enjoyed playing pool at the Kirtland Senior Citizens Center and traveling with the John Roberts group. He also enjoyed mowing his grass and restoring antique cars with his son. Mr. Johnson was employed in quality control at the former Chase Brass and Copper Company in Euclid for 30 years, and then worked in maintenance for the Kirtland Local Schools for 15 years, retiring in 1988. Survivors are his wife of 67 years, AuVergne C. (Chapman) Johnson; son, William (Deborah) Johnson of Kirtland and daughters, Karen (Richard) Yukl of Mentor and Sheryle (Tony) Augusta of Willoughby; grandchildren, John (Stacey) Johnson, Shawnna (Brian) Thomas, Anthony (Shannon) Augusta, Renee (Joshua) Healan; great grandchildren, Madison, Morgan, Cierra, Haley, Olivia, Juliana, Justin and Kelly; and brothers, Robert Johnson of Mentor and Donald (Wilma) Johnson of Wellsboro, PA. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and their families. His parents, Joakim and Elizabeth (Stanton) Johnson and brothers, Joakim, Harold and William Johnson are deceased. The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Thursday, (today), September 27, 2012 at the funeral home. Elder Steven E. Davidson of the Kirtland Community of Christ and Pastor Thomas Chapman of Grand River Community Chapel will co-officiate at the service. Final resting place will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, Chester Twp. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to The Kirtland Kiwanis Scholarship Fund, c/o Don Seaburn, 36625 Vine Street, Willoughby, OH 44094.
